Australia’s plastic – 19% recovery rate with the rest going to landfill.

Waste categories with the lowest recovery rates in Australia were:
- Plastics: 19%, due to high proportion sent to landfill
- Textiles, leather and rubber: 26%
- Hazardous waste: 27%
All plastic types had the worst recovery rates of around 15%. Of 2.5 tonnes generated, 84% is sent straight to landfill.

I am not the best at reducing food waste – I do have a worm farm for my organic waste but that’s about it. But I am doing my best to make positive changes to my shopping habits and my cooking commitments. Over 5 million tonnes of food ends up as landfill in Australia each year, according to the Department of Environment and Energy. We can all do our part by minimising food waste, every effort counts - no matter how small,
